Hackney NEU supports and represents its members in academies in the same way as teachers in local authority maintained schools.
Academies, trusts and foundation trusts have the power to vary the pay and conditions they offer to employees. As academies have the status of independent schools, they can operate outside the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD). If you work at a school that converts to become an academy then you will have protection of your pay and conditions under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) (TUPE) legislation. The Department for Education (DfE) states that it is “the responsibility” of the academy to agree levels of the pay with its employees. Although, in almost all cases, academies claim they pay according to their own scale, in practice these bear a close resemblance to the provisions of the STPCD. Teachers who work or who are planning to work for an academy should check with the school if salaries are in accordance with the STPCD.
