Equalities and Hackney District NEU
Hackney District of the National Education Union places a priority on equality both for our members, for the children and students we teach and the communities they come from. Our predecessor, the Hackney Teachers Association (NUT), had a proud record of challenging racism, sexism, homophobia, disabilism both in the employment of staff and in making sure these issues and Equalities in general were covered in the lessons and curriculum we taught. In world history and geography we examined the history of slavery, social class, exploitation, racism, sexism, homophobia and disabilism. (See our booklet on this website for a history of Developing Equalities For School Staff and Students 2017/2018). We need to bring this wider view back into a narrow curriculum imposed by the Government in recent years.
